This morning, while walking to a grocery store, I followed a parade down the street to the beach. Girls were wearing fiesta skirts and students were in their blue and white uniforms, behind a band. It ended at the beach where two men played a large marimba. It was a celebration for el dia de Guanacaste but I accepted it as a welcome to me!
My first welcome was the proprietor of the cabinas inviting me to join his cookout last night on the porch. I like my room here at Playas del Coco, where I will stay five nights. It´s about 15´by 15´ and includes a corner kitchen.
At low tide, I walked south around the rocky point to a small beach at the foot of a steep woody slope. I swam and studied Spanish. At first, I was the only human and I observed hermit crabs, butterlies, and pelicans. Then a motor boat anchored off shore and six boys jumped off and swam. Two of the smaller boys came up to where I was sitting under a tree and asked if I had any cigarettes. An older brother or uncle scooted them back to the shore. Later, a woman with a toddler walked by, stopping to look for seashells. Three girls came south of the rocky point and played in the surf.
