trailblazing

“When you write, you lay out a line of words. The line of words is a miner’s pick, a woodcarver’s gouge, surgeon’s probe. You wield it, and it digs a path you follow. Soon you find yourself deep in new territory. Is it a dead end, or have you located the real subject? You will know tomorrow, or this time next year.” Annie Dillard

I guess this is like most things I set out to do. Tomorrow I will know if I am following the right path. Or, maybe I will know next year.

Coming to teach school in Costa Rica and to live in a Quaker community was a brave dream one year ago. I may know next year what treasures I am uncovering this year. I could come to realize problems I have set in motion. I may come to understand more by and by.

Meanwhile I am clearing trails and exploring new ground.
